Dr. Pathapati Ravi Raju – A Visionary Leader in Healthcare and Wellness
Dr. Pathapati Ravi Raju, an eminent physician, public health advocate, and humanitarian, was born on 15th May 1962 in R.K.V.B. Petta village, Karvetinagaram Mandal, Chittoor District. The son of late Sri Pathapati Ranga Raju and Smt. Rukkamma, both farmers, he grew up grounded in simplicity, compassion, and service values that became the foundation of his inspiring medical and social journey.
He completed his early education in his village and later studied at the Government College, Karvetinagaram, earning his B.Sc. from Nagari degree college. Dedicated to healthcare from a young age, he pursued M.B.B.S. at S.V. Medical College, Tirupati, under Sri Venkateswara University. He went on to acquire Master of Public Health (MPH) from Wollongong University, Australia and a Diploma & Master’s in Diabetology from Annamalai University. Despite receiving lucrative opportunities abroad, his unwavering love for his homeland brought him back to India to serve the underprivileged.
After completing his medical education, Dr. Ravi Raju joined Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, as a Junior Resident in Emergency Medicine, where he was known for his quick thinking and life-saving interventions. Later, as Medical Officer at the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Karvetinagaram (since 1999), he transformed rural healthcare through visionary leadership and innovation.
At PHC Karvetinagaram, Dr. Ravi Raju played a key role in reshaping public healthcare delivery. He modernized the hospital's facilities, introduced high-quality diagnostics and medicines comparable to corporate hospitals, and achieved these improvements through active collaboration with government authorities. His door-to-door healthcare service initiative became a model that was later implemented statewide, setting a new standard for rural public health delivery.
He also took strong steps to protect the environment and community health. Leading by example, he organized and executed a massive planting drive of 15,000 saplings in a single day across Karvetinagaram Mandal—highlighting his vision that environmental protection is an essential part of public health.
Among his many achievements are the detection of India’s first anthrax case at a PHC level, the establishment of Diabetic Day and insulin therapy facilities at the primary level, and the successful medical management of a 70 kg ovarian cyst without surgery.
❖ Inspiring Leadership During the COVID-19 Pandemic
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Dr. Pathapati Ravi Raju stood at the forefront of the crisis. Serving as District COVID Triage Nodal Officer and Nagari Constituency COVID In-Charge, he coordinated large-scale preventive and treatment programs. In a time of fear and uncertainty about vaccination, he personally took the first vaccine shot publicly, demonstrating confidence in science and encouraging people to come forward.
